Find Fish Type
Name of Fish:
| Butterfly fish (Saltwater Fish) | |
The butterfly fish is another colorful species that can look really good in a saltwater aquarium. The shape of their body is oval in shape and the lateral width is very less. The shape of their body makes it easy for them to explore the nooks and corners of the coral reefs and find food. Their primary food includes corals, sponges and algae. There are some species of butterfly fish which prefer to have tiny planktons and thus can be placed under omnivorous category. You should bring them to the aquarium when they are young and will need to feed them several times everyday. |
| Angel fish (Saltwater Fish) | |
Angle fish is one of the most vibrantly colored specimens that will add excessive beauty to a saltwater aquarium. This fish is available in different shapes and sizes. The smallest member of this family belongs to the genus Centropyge and is often called the Pigmy fish. The medium and big ones can belong to the genus Holacanthus and Holacanthus respectively. Though the adult specimens are simply magnificent to look at but they are destructive to some extent for the coral reefs that you place inside the saltwater aquarium. They live on tunicates and various sponges. They can live for long years if taken care properly. |
| Blennies (Saltwater Fish) | |
Blennies are a specific type of long fish with blunt head. You will often find the male blennies more vibrant in color than the female ones. In fact the male blennies can sometimes change their body color before the spawning or after it. They are very lively animals and can make your saltwater aquarium look quite energetic as well. They will simply like the aquarium if it contains a lot of rocks as they are fond of perching on the rocks. They can feed on small fishes or algae and in order to do so they will hop behind the rocks. Some of them are conscious about their territory and this is the reason why it is not advisable to keep the blennies with smaller fishes. |
| Clownfish (Saltwater Fish) | |
The clownfish is a colorful species which can add some entertainment and fun to the saltwater aquariums. They have a peculiar wobbling movement and the coloring also resembles that of a clown. They are also called the anemone fish. This is because they often live with the sea-anemones in symbiosis. This stands for a living together relationship between these two species which is beneficial for both. The clownfish can live on various living or non-living fodder. They eat brine shrimps, flakes, algae etc. They have a strange habit of becoming aggressive as they become older with the passage of time. But there are exceptions as well like” Blue reef chromis”, skunk clown”, “Green Chromis” etc. |
| Damselfish (Saltwater Fish) | |
The Damselfish are quite colorful and the best thing about them is that they are very much adaptable to the environment of the aquariums. They are the relatives of the clownfish. The Damselfish bear a relationship of commensalisms with the anemones which means both of them are benefited from this. These fishes resemble with the clownfish in their habits remarkably. They become slightly aggressive with age though there are some exceptions. Some of them are carnivorous and feed on shrimps, frozen food and flakes. But there are herbivores as well. They generally live for 20 years in their natural habitats and 10 years in an aquarium. |
| Marine eels (Saltwater Fish) | |
The Romans used to pamper these eels a lot and they even used to decorate them with precious jewels. The marine eels are generally segregated into two categories. They are "Moray Eel" and "Chainlink Moray Eel". They can grow up to 2.5 feet. Their common foods are invertebrates and small fishes. But the Chainlink Moray Eel have teeth inside their mouth which helps them to crush the shells of mollusks and crustaceans. Some of the Moray eels eat sea urchin. They prefer to live in the reefs and caves and are nocturnal in nature. They hide inside and catch the fishes that wade through the near by water. They are capable of finding their food from the smell of it. These eels will need a lot of space, hiding place and ample food to live happily inside the saltwater aquarium. |
| Gobies (Saltwater Fish) | |
These are another colorful species which belong to a large family. They are somewhat similar to the blennies and come with long but blunt heads. But they are far more colorful than the blennies. They can also perch on the rocks as well as on the sea bed with the help of their fused pelvic fin that form a “suction disk”. The other species which is known as dart gobies or dart fish prefer to swim above the rocks. They are carnivorous in nature. So the food that you can provide them inside the aquarium could be shrimps, fish or meat chopped finely. The male gobies might change their colors and get elongated in shape at the time of spawning. After spawning in the caves, the male takes care of the egg which is an example of parental care in their species. |
| Sea basses (Saltwater Fish) | |
These fishes should be kept in a large aquarium with their own groups. The reason is that they are predators and prefer to stay in the company of their own species. After becoming mature they can also grow in size substantially. But they should be brought to the aquarium at the juvenile stage. As they are predators, they feed on meat or other fishes. Their favorite food list includes brine shrimps, calms, squids and sometimes gold fishes. Most of the species in this family have dots on their body which make them look more attractive. Some of them are tough to be kept in an aquarium as they prefer to eat their prey and cannot take the supplied food fast. |
| Hawkfish (Saltwater Fish) | |
They are named after the hunter bird Hawk because of their strong predatory nature. They are not very large at size and spend most of the time in overhanging on the coral reefs or its branches. But they are quite sharp at using their pectoral fins to sit on the rocks waiting top attack the prey. In fact their alertness and active movements become very enjoyable in an aquarium. At the same time they are very robust. Their size ranges from 10 cms to 1 meter. Their body is pretty stout and the heads are large unlike the blennies. They bear the cirri which look like tuft of thin hair above their dorsal fin. The number of species known of the Hawkfish family is 5. |
| Lionfish (Saltwater Fish) | |
These are another predatory fish which mainly attack those species which are in groups. They look very lazy and often hang on the coral reef without moving a bit and this is the way they wait for their prey to come close. They have poisonous spines on the dorsal fins. Their sting can sometimes be really fatal but that depends on the species. Some of them feel like typical bee stings but in certain cases the pain becomes unbearable and cause death. They live in caves and are nocturnal in nature. They come out of the holes at night and hunt for food. When in an aquarium they like to eat living food. If kept in the reefs they will eat the shrimps and crabs. |
